What is Health Coaching?
Updated: Apr 29, 2019
When people hear that I'm a #healthcoach, I'm often met with blank stares. Because there are so many kinds of coaching out there, it seems that health coaching in particular can feel a little ambiguous...
Is it just about shedding that 10 lbs my doctor told me I need to lose?
Is it about getting my blood pressure or cholesterol numbers down?
Is it about decreasing my joint pain?
Yes! Health coaching is all those things, but it's also so much more!
Health coaching is such a new field. Right now in the United States there's very little regulation around what makes up health coaching and who can offer it. Because of this there is huge discrepancy from coach to coach as far as what to expect, content, and styles of coaching. Luckily for us, in 2016 the National Consortium for Credentialing of Health and Wellness Coaches and the National Board of Medical Examiners joined together to launch the first set of national standards for wellness coaches. They've created a certifying exam which coaches can choose to sit for (and which I will take in June!). In the future, it is my hope that all wellness coaches will be required to sit for this exam so health coaching can become a consistent, straightforward service no matter who you're seeing or where you are in the US.
Until this happens, each health coach you find might do things a little differently! I work under the umbrella of Functional Medicine, making me a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach. I received my coaching certificate from the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy in January of 2019. This means that I work on helping individuals feel better than they've ever felt in their lives through looking at modifying aspects of their #lifestyle like #diet, movement, sleep, hydration, #stressmanagement, work-life balance, social support... the list goes on.
Functional Medicine is evidence-based and up-to-date with the latest, well-designed scientific studies focused on human health. In Functional Medicine we aim to get at the root cause of the condition, not just the management of its symptoms.
So what happens in a health coaching session?
During your time with me we'll take a look at the big picture of your life and identify any areas that need a little attention (like #nutrition, #sleep, #socialsupport, #movement, #hydration, etc). We'll discuss any current #goals or shifts you are hoping to make, any ailments or concerns you might have, and finally, anything that you're already doing that feels great and helpful and on the right track. From there we will design together the most #empowering, #fun, #fulfilling plan for you. And maybe the best part? You are in the driver's seat the whole time! That means any shifts you'd like to make will happen on your terms when you're feeling ready. I will be beside you each step of the way to check in, troubleshoot, and help you find renewed #motivation whenever you need it, because oftentimes a little #support makes all the difference.
Health coaching is for everyone
You don't have to have a diagnosis or a note from your doctor in order to benefit from health coaching.
Maybe you're 6 months into your chemotherapy treatment and you want more resources to help you as you heal...
Maybe you just had a baby and would love some help finding a beautiful new balance in your daily life...
Maybe your anxiety or depression is in the foreground and you'd like some practical tools and resources to help you feel better...
No matter your life circumstance, goals or challenges, health coaching is for you! Oftentimes just a little #support and a check-in here and there is all we need to stay on track and feel continued #motivation. Many coaches (myself included) are happy to offer coaching sessions through a video chat service or even over the phone. Would you rather sit down with someone in your area for an in-person coaching session? Visit the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy's Find A Coach page to find a #coach in your area!

Health coaching is not meant to replace your current medical treatment plan, but rather can work alongside it to bring you past the absence of your current symptoms, all the way to true thriving and wellness.
